Five Tips to Take Better Children’s Photos

This weeks “Friendly Advice Friday ~ F.A.F.” comes from Negroni Studio.

1. Go Down or Up – Go down to your knees to their height level and shoot from there. For face portraits get close and shoot from above with the childs level and have them look at the camera. This approach will make their facial expressions stand out.

2. Get in Tight – Do not leave large empty spaces around the child, unless you are trying to feature the landscape as well. Do leave some headroom, but make sure most of the space is filled with your subject instead of a distracting background.

3. Watch for hands and feet! – If you are taking a portrait (from the thighs and up), make sure their hands are visible within the frame. If you are taking a full body, watch out for their feet.

4. Do not Center – The first thing we learn in professional photography is what is called “the rule of thirds”. Frame the photo so that your childs image covers only two-thirds of the photo and leave some empty space to the left or right, equals to a third of the space. Your photo will look like a magazine shot!

5. Learn how to operate your camera! – This might sound intimidating, but new cameras have great features that will help you take better photos. A really helpful setup is a setup for action photos, which avoids blurry photos if your child is moving. Other special setups might include better exposure for low-light situations and even a portrait feature to blur out any distracting backgrounds.

Brand – as defined by Wikipedia – is the identity of a specific product or service or business. What does that mean for you? It means your brand is more than the product you sell, but more importantly the service you provide. Pause to think about this… Y ou might be among many businesses in town offering the same product, but your service is where your brand can set you apart!

When you think of branding – does your logo come to mind? Your brand is so much more than your logo! By trade, I love to see beautifully branded marketing materials. The same logo style, color palate and font styles should be used across all marketing and promotional products. National brands like car manufacturers and retailers are easily identified in commercials, billboards and print ads before ever seeing their name or logo. This happens because they are branded beyond their logo.

This reminds me of a case study I read. A group of children were given 2 identical sets of food. Some branded in McDonalds wrappers and packaging, others weren’t. The children preferred the taste of the food wrapped in the familiar McDonald’s package to the other food. This is a perfect example of how branding has worked to persuade children to eat a certain product.

Sit down with all of your marketing and advertising materials (web pages, brochure, business cards, letterhead, ads, etc.). Take a look at all items. They should family one another in design, look and messaging. Pay particular attention to what the words say about your business. Are you communicating the SERVICE aspect of your brand, or only the product?
